Eleventh Grade - Crucible Essay

Self Conscience and Public Action
In recent news, Miley Cyrus deleted her Twitter to try to keep her mistakes to herself. She’s always on the cover of magazines because of all the little things she does wrong and she hoped by deleting it, it’d stop some of the publicity. Every experience that Cyrus lived through made her the person she is today, but it’s not just because she’s famous. Many pieces of literature express a characters feelings and emotions by the way they act towards their peers. As hard as they may try to keep their lives to themselves, it’s nearly impossible for secrets not to escape. In The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, many of the characters portray the concept that someone's inner voice can’t be separated from their public action.
The harder Abigail Williams tries to separate her life from her surroundings, the more it falls apart. She wanted her life to be no one else's business because she is very manipulative which caused her to have many kept secrets form her peers. One of the secrets that Abigail has to keep is her plan to kill Goody Proctor. All because of jealousy, she wanted an innocent lady killed. Abigail was used to getting what she wanted and when that didn’t occur, she was ready to murder the one person in her way. Unlike Abigail, Cryus deleted her Twitter to hide her everyday problems, not her manipulative ways. Instead of letting people make up rumors in magazines, Cyrus got the valid reason across as soon as she could. She created a video telling her fans why and in it she stated multiple reasons. “I want my private life private, I’m done trying to please. I ain’t living for tabloids, no, I’m living for me,” she explained. From this short video, we get the impression that Cyrus was just simply annoyed with the public knowing her whole life. Throughout the entire play Abigail did everything she could to make sure nobody found out about her devious plan. To keep this secret was no challenge for her. She had a lot of ways to make sure no one would ever know.
Everyone in the village saw Abigail as a beautiful and charming young girl and because of this it was very easy to keep her secret. In order to cover up her plan to kill Goody Proctor, she got everyone to believe that the people with no social status should be guilty of witchcraft. She thought it would be simple to convince everyone with a bunch of lies, but as people started to catch on to her, she got worried. She started to make her friends lie about her mistakes just to save her reputation. She stated, “...Listen, now; if they be questioning us, tell them we danced-I told him as much already” (Miller 18). She knew how to use reverse psychology to get around any problems but she never thought she’d get caught.
Abigail was always eager to get her revenge. She was willing to do anything to get what she wanted, but when her plans slowly started to fall apart, she immediately fled the village. By doing this, she drew much more attention to herself. For both Abigail and Cyrus, they shouldn’t have done anything too drastic to bring themselves any more attention, but they did. Although Abigail never directly stated that she manipulated her friends and family, they all began to understand what she was really about. Trying to keep everything a secret never really worked out for her because by the end of the play she was running away from the mess she created.
By the end of the play, Abigail was completely aware of the disaster she started. Instead of sticking around and learning to tell the truth, she stole her uncles money and left. She lied and hid a bunch of secrets and she should have just confessed and told the truth. No ones private life can be hidden forever. Everything a person experiences affects how they act when they go out. For example, if one was to just lose a loved one, they wouldn’t be as happy or kind to others as they would be if they just got married. In my eyes, when one person handles too much stress, it’ll put them in a bad situation and any human being would end up falling apart. Abigail and Cyrus both attempted to live the way they wanted to without any affect from the public, but they realized that would never work.
